The book is the memory of the wartime generation, a witness to the most tragic day in the country’s history. The recollections of very different people — from Moscow resident Marusya K. to People’s Commissar for Foreign Affairs Vyacheslav Molotov — together with photographic documents of everyday life during the last peaceful hours and the first military communiqués, all help create a panorama of that fateful Sunday in 1941. The book allows the reader to live through that tragic and great day — June 22 — and understand how the life of a Soviet person and of the country itself was divided into a before and an after. The book also describes world and interstate events that preceded the war and the international reaction to Germany’s attack on the USSR. The recollections of diplomats and intelligence officers, together with excerpts from newspapers and magazines from different countries, help explain the complexity and ambiguity of the events that led to the beginning of the war. The book is illustrated with unique photographs and contains a number of documents, including documents that were declassified only recently.
