Imperial War Museum

What the Germans Did to Women. An Excerpt from the Diary of a Girl Whom the Germans Used as Free Labor. Life in the Camp
Why have modern Germans launched a campaign about “German women raped by Soviet soldiers,” and how did German fascists rape and kill women and children in Soviet occupied territories? What do you know about the German genocide of Soviet citizens during the Great Patriotic War?

It is strange that many years after the Second World War modern Germans were suddenly and unexpectedly overcome by grief for “German women raped by Soviet soldiers.” Apparently Germans, who are constantly reminded of war crimes, also wanted to have at least someone to accuse of something. But it would not do for Germans to accuse the Americans and British, whose carpet bombing literally wiped Dresden and other German cities, together with their civilian populations, from the face of the earth. Nor can they accuse the Czechs and Poles, who carried out the largest and most brutal deportation of the twentieth century—the postwar expulsion of ethnic Germans from their countries. Between 12 and 14 million Germans were expelled during that deportation, and up to 2 million of them died. Many German women among them were raped. The Poles were especially savage in this respect. They raped and killed German women on the marches during the deportation. German women were also raped in concentration camps established by the Poles for Germans who had been left behind to rebuild the economy destroyed by the war. But in today’s tolerant Europe it is supposedly not customary to condemn one’s neighbor. Russians are there for that purpose.
Yes, isolated rapes of German women during the war were committed by both American and Russian soldiers. But in neither case, the author argues, did they become a mass phenomenon. Soviet soldiers were severely punished by their own command for raping German women; some, it is said, were even shot for the crime.
“In fact, statistically inevitable cases of crime among Red Army soldiers,” write contemporary historians who, according to the author, objectively examine the history of the 1941–1945 war, “were not widespread and were condemned by official propaganda and military justice. /…/ The myth about them was actively spread by German military propaganda at the final stage of the war in order to mobilize the population to resist the anti-Hitler coalition.
After the war, examples of propaganda from Goebbels’s ministry were actively used by the United States against the USSR, which was reflected in a number of ‘historical studies’ that are subjected to well-founded criticism by contemporary authors (The Great Slandered War. We Have Nothing to Repent For! Collection. Moscow: Yauza, Eksmo, 2008).”
And so, the article continues, today’s Germans, entirely in the spirit of Goebbels’s propaganda and of the United States during the Cold War, began their campaign against Russia. At last they supposedly received the long-awaited opportunity to take things out on someone and pour out their anger over the lost war, the constant reminders of the Nazi past, and the war crimes that had been committed. Yet, judging by the campaign about raped German women, the Nazi past has not been forgotten in Germany at all, because the same old methods of Goebbels-style propaganda are being used.
The Germans, however, also borrowed something from the French. The slogan:
“Davai, davai!”
which accompanied this latest campaign against Russians, is said to have been plainly copied from the phrase
“Bystro, bystro!”
which supposedly became common among the French during the war with Napoleon. According to a legend, this expression originated with Russian Cossacks who, during their rapid advance on Paris, would burst into roadside restaurants and ask to be served as quickly as possible: “Bystro, bystro”—“Quickly, quickly.” The article repeats the folk etymology that the Russian word “bystro” gave French the word “bistro,” meaning a small fast-service restaurant.
But if, the article says, the French phrase “bystro, bystro!” is historically authentic, its German counterpart “davai, davai!” is a modern and unsuccessful invention—that is,
yet another fabrication in the spirit of the lies
which today, it says, flow toward Russia from the West in foul-smelling streams.
Thus, according to the author, Germany launched a campaign about “raped German women,” who of course were said to have been raped by Russians.
Russians themselves, the article asserts, are generally not vindictive and do not blame modern Germans for what their grandfathers and fathers did on Soviet soil. We do not accuse modern Germans, it says. But what their grandfathers and fathers did on our land cannot be forgiven. There is no statute of limitations for these crimes. Never. Nor, the author says, can the crimes of German fascists who raped Soviet women, young girls, and even children and then brutally murdered them be forgiven.
A certain British Lady Gibb, historian A. R. Dyukov reports in his book about the war What the Soviet People Fought For (Moscow, 2007), wrote a letter in the autumn of 1944 in which she
appealed for tolerance and asked for reconciliation between Russians and Germans.
She wrote this appeal when the Red Army had reached the borders of the Third Reich. The letter by the British human-rights advocate was also published in the Soviet press. It provoked an enormous response in the Soviet Union. Hundreds of Red Army soldiers wrote in reply. The following are excerpts from those letters, reproduced in full in historian A. R. Dyukov’s book.
Private Zakharov:
“Our people neither take revenge nor forgive; they judge. If Lady Gibb had lived in one of the cities occupied by the Germans, if she had seen the ‘dear’ Germans rape her daughter, if her elderly mother had been torn apart by tanks, if her father had died in a Gestapo dungeon, what would she say then? No, lady, you have no heart; you have no respect for your own people, who are suffering from the horrors of war.”
Scout, Junior Lieutenant Zinchenko:
“In 1941 German pilots strafed refugees at low altitude. One of them landed—he had been shot down. He was asked why he had killed children, and the bodies were shown to him. He replied: ‘The Führer and Germany take no account of that.’”
Tank officer Captain Fomenko:
“I have been fighting since the first day of the war. Before my eyes in 1941, near Baranovichi, the Germans crushed about seventy women and children under tank tracks.”
Junior Lieutenant Zumer:
“The Germans took my relatives out onto the Kamianets-Podilskyi highway, forced them to dig pits, then shot them, and threw the children alive into the graves… When, after something like this, people openly speak in defense of child-murderers, I say: this is a disgrace to our age!”
Lieutenant Ruzov:
“The Germans shot my son in Minsk. He was sixteen months old. I want to ask the highly respected lady: what had that infant done against the so-called Third Reich? … Every Red Army soldier knows that we are going to Berlin not for booty. We are going to judge the guilty, and this is not only in our interests but in the interests of all freedom-loving peoples.”
Guards Sergeant Major Pronin:
“/…/ Reading the lady’s letter, I remembered how we entered the newly liberated village of Bukhalovo. There was not a living soul there.
In the first house we entered, we saw a child with twisted little arms lying in a pool of blood beside his mother’s corpse… If Lady Gibb and those who think like her had seen that picture, they would not have dared to write about mercy…”
Private Fomenko:
“/…/ Lady, do you know a girl named Anna Tereshchenko from the village of Mayevaya on the Terek? No, you do not. But I attended her funeral.
When two red-haired Germans burst into her clean cottage, she was doing the washing. They seized her and raped her.
You, raised on the finest poets, can you imagine what it means to rape a proud Cossack woman? She took her own life. And we are supposed to forgive this? I wish you all the best and advise you to occupy yourself with useful work for the good of your country; then all sorts of bad thoughts will not enter your head.”
Sergeant Vorobyov:
“/…/ Passing the village of Kliny, we saw a terrible sight: village boys had been shot below the hill, bullets in the backs of their heads; a little farther away lay girls who had been raped, their breasts cut off; separately, in a pit, an old man and an old woman had been strangled. Why did they die, Lady Gibb? Because they were Russians? I do not know whether you have children, but we, the fathers and mothers of the Russian people, cannot forgive. /…/ I want you to understand that there can be no question of forgiving the Germans.”

The entire Denisenkov family—five adults and a two-year-old child—was shot.
In total, in these villages Hitler’s troops shot, brutally tortured to death, and burned 166 innocent women, children, and elderly people.
And now, the article turns to German atrocities against female prisoners of war: doctors, nurses, communications personnel, and others. In his memoirs German officer Bruno Schneider described the briefing German soldiers received before being sent to the Russian front.
Regarding women serving in the Red Army, the order stated one thing:
“Shoot them!”
(“Fascist Atrocities against Russian Women.”)
In many German units that is exactly what they did.
Among those killed in combat and encirclements, large numbers of bodies of women in Red Army uniform were found.
Among them were many nurses
and female medical assistants.
The marks on their bodies showed that many had been brutally tortured before being shot.
Female prisoners of war were subjected to torture whose cruelty, the article says, would have made medieval inquisitors envious: they were impaled, had hot red pepper forced into their bodies, and so forth. They were often abused by German female camp commandants, many of whom were said to display openly sadistic tendencies.
In addition to these atrocities, female Red Army prisoners were constantly subjected to rape. Senior Wehrmacht officers were forbidden to have intimate relations with Slavic women, so they did so secretly. Rank-and-file soldiers had more freedom in this regard. After a female Red Army soldier or nurse was discovered, an entire company of soldiers might rape her. If the girl did not die afterward, she was shot.
Residents of Smagleevka (Voronezh Region
) Residents of Smagleevka (Voronezh Region) said after their liberation in 1943:
“At the beginning of the war a young female Red Army soldier died a terrible death in our village. She was badly wounded. In spite of this, they stripped her naked, dragged her out onto the road, and shot her.
Terrible signs of torture were left on the unfortunate woman’s body.
Before her death they cut off her breasts and completely mutilated her face and hands. Her body was one bloody mass.”
The article says that Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya was treated in a similar way.
Before her public execution Hitler’s troops kept her half-naked in the freezing cold for hours.
It was not only torture that destroyed the morale and remaining strength of the exhausted women, but also the absence of even elementary hygiene. Washing was out of the question for prisoners. Insect bites and festering infections were added to their wounds.
Women serving in the armed forces knew how the fascists treated them and therefore fought to the last.
In his February 1943 column Ilya Ehrenburg cited the example of Kursk,
which at that moment had just been liberated by the Red Army:
“They closed the schools. They closed the theaters. They closed the libraries. What did they open? A brothel on Nevsky Street. They opened it ceremonially. Herr Dr. Vogt delivered a speech: ‘We are bringing merriment into the icy wilderness.’ They did not bring merriment. They brought infection.
Before the war syphilis had virtually disappeared in Kursk.
The Germans infected Kursk. According to German statistics, among the civilian population seventy to eighty cases of venereal disease were registered every ten days. The sick were sent to the city prison. The Germans killed more than a hundred of them.
These syphilitic baboons left behind not only ruins and the ditch at Shchetinka [the site of mass executions in Kursk Region.—Ed.]. They left behind a terrible infection.”
Historian of the German occupation Boris Kovalyov confirms Ehrenburg’s account: the Kursk archives contain a huge number of registration cards for residents who contracted venereal diseases during the occupation.
The establishment of brothels in occupied territories, the article says, was organized with typical German thoroughness and operated like a conveyor belt. Whenever German soldiers and officers had several days’ rest, temporary brothels were organized wherever they were quartered, and young girls—sometimes children—were forcibly rounded up for them. In
large cities
permanent brothels were established.
For nine years the Berlin scholar Robert Sommer studied documents scattered through archives and memorial complexes in various countries and interviewed victims of sexual exploitation and surviving eyewitnesses. On the basis of this material he wrote the book “The Concentration Camp Brothel” (Robert Sommer, “The Concentration Camp Brothel,” in Taboos of the Second World War). The scholar challenged the myth that the National Socialists fought prostitution. Rather, the regime sought total control over a highly profitable business. An entire network of brothels covering half of Europe and the occupied territories of the USSR was controlled by the authorities of Nazi Germany and, the article says, brought the Nazis enormous revenues.
“The army of the Third Reich had an entire system of sexual servicing,” Russian journalist Andrei Vasilchenko writes in his study Prostitution in the Third Reich. “Everything was taken into account and calculated: every prostitute was assigned a ‘production norm,’ and these figures were not plucked out of thin air but were supposedly scientifically justified.
/…/ Incidentally, only brothels for soldiers and NCOs moved directly behind the troops.
They were located in a village or small town not far from the unit, and soldiers received leave to visit them. Prostitutes were brought
to the homes
of officers who were not permitted to go far from their posts.
Army brothels for enlisted men were officially supposed to have prostitutes at a ratio of one woman per one hundred soldiers. For NCOs the figure was reduced to seventy-five.
In officers’ brothels, one prostitute served fifty officers.
/…/ When girls entered this work they received the status of a ‘cultural worker,’ which entailed special documents and an individual serial number. From then on their lives were strictly regulated. They lived permanently in the brothel.
Visits to a doctor or hairdresser could only be made under escort by an officer or soldier specially assigned for the purpose. Even the route they took through the city was strictly prescribed by the occupying authorities—not one step to the side.
If a ‘cultural worker’ from a brothel became pregnant, she was required to continue working for another three months.”
When a German battleship docked at a port occupied by the Germans, work in the occupiers’ brothels became especially intense. Women, according to the cited account, “simply remained lying in the rooms,” receiving as many as five dozen sailors a day.
Concentration camps had their own brothels.
Amid mass hunger, exhausting labor, and high mortality, some women went there voluntarily while others were forced into this “work.”
“It is almost impossible to imagine what these women had to endure: humiliation, punishment, isolation, discrimination, and disease. When a woman’s sexual attractiveness was deemed exhausted, or if she became ill or pregnant, she was exchanged like an object for a new one.
Those who were worn out were sent back to the concentration camp, where, if they were not shot or gassed, they died of venereal disease.”
(Robert Sommer, “The Concentration Camp Brothel,” in Taboos of the Second World War.)
As for the occupied territories of the Soviet Union,
the recreational establishments had to be created from scratch.
They had not existed there before. Bloody fighting was taking place at the front, on the approaches to Leningrad, while in the quiet rear the Germans settled in and tried to create comfortable conditions for rest and leisure.
“A German soldier must eat on time, wash, and relieve sexual tension”—this, the article says, was how many Wehrmacht commanders reasoned. To address the last of these “needs,” brothels were established in major occupied cities, rooms for sexual encounters were set up at German canteens and restaurants, and freelance prostitution was also permitted. (Robert Sommer, “The Concentration Camp Brothel,” in Taboos of the Second World War.)
In brothels, the racial origin of women ceased to matter. Their attractiveness was what counted. Women were driven there by terrible hunger. The Germans occupying Soviet towns and villages thoroughly plundered everything people had. Women in brothels worked literally for a loaf of bread, often in order to feed their children. Some canteens and restaurants where German soldiers ate had so-called “meeting rooms.” Waitresses and dishwashers, in addition to their ordinary work in the kitchen and dining hall, were required to provide sexual services, again in exchange for bread.
Food was not always the only issue. Some women were simply forced into sexual relations by Germans who threatened to shoot their children or relatives. In addition to brothels, street prostitution appeared in the occupied territories. For some women it became the only way to avoid starvation and feed small children or sick parents. After the war, the average incidence of syphilis was 174.6 cases per 100,000 population. Soviet medicine needed ten years to return the figure to the prewar level of 3.5 cases per 100,000.
The article notes that Lithuanians, Estonians, and Latvians sometimes exceeded the Germans in cruelty.
See a video by the well-known historian Yegor Yakovlev about the initial stages of the German genocide:
Since ancient times war had been regarded as a man’s affair. The Great Patriotic War, however, overturned that stereotype: thousands of Soviet women patriots went to the front and fought alongside men for the freedom of their homeland. Hitler’s troops encountered such numbers of women in active Red Army units for the first time and therefore did not immediately recognize them as military personnel. For almost the entire war an order remained in force under which female Red Army personnel were equated with partisans and were subject to execution. But many Soviet women and girls faced an equally tragic fate—to survive German captivity, torture, and abuse.
The terrible fate of female medical personnel in German captivity
Tens of thousands of female medical workers were mobilized into the Red Army. Many, after completing training, went to the front or joined the people’s militia as volunteers. Despite the humanitarian nature of medical work, the Germans treated captured nurses, medical orderlies, and medical instructors with the same cruelty as other prisoners of war.
There are many accounts of atrocities committed against Soviet female medical workers. A captured nurse or orderly could be raped by an entire company of soldiers. Eyewitnesses recalled finding shot Russian nurses on the roads in winter—naked, with obscene inscriptions on their bodies. On one occasion
Soviet soldiers
found the frozen corpse of a nineteen-year-old nurse who had been impaled, with her eyes gouged out, one breast cut off, and her hair turned gray. Those sent to concentration camps faced unbearable labor, inhuman conditions, humiliation, and violence at the hands of guards.
What awaited a female sniper in German captivity
No other army in the world could boast as many snipers as the Red Army during the Great Patriotic War. From mid-1943 until the end of the war alone, the Central Women’s Sniper Training School graduated more than a thousand snipers and more than four hundred instructors. Female marksmen inflicted losses on enemy personnel no less significant than those caused by male snipers. The fascists feared and fiercely hated
the courageous Red Army women
and called them the “invisible terror.”
There were cases when German servicemen showed some leniency toward young female snipers, but as a rule gender played no role. The women understood that it was better not to be captured, and in addition to the necessary sniper equipment they carried grenades and, when surrounded, sometimes blew themselves up. Those unable to do so faced terrible suffering.
Thus Hero of the Soviet Union Tatyana Baramzina, while covering the retreat of her comrades, was badly wounded, fell into Nazi hands, and was subjected to brutal torture. Her body was found with her eyes gouged out and her head shattered by a shot from an anti-tank rifle.
Sniper Maria Golyshkina said that her partner Anna Sokolova was captured and, after elaborate torture, hanged. Hitler’s troops attempted to recruit female marksmen who had been sent to concentration camps, but there is no evidence that any agreed to cooperate. Women snipers who survived the camps preferred not to describe the details of their time in fascist captivity, unwilling to recall the horrors of the past.
The tragic story of female scouts captured by the Germans
History records many feats performed by young Soviet female scouts. The Komsomol member Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya, a soldier in an intelligence-sabotage unit of the Western Front headquarters, became a symbol of heroism and self-sacrifice. A schoolgirl only the day before, she volunteered for the front. In November 1941, while carrying out a command assignment to set fire to several
settlements
in the Moscow Region, she fell into German hands.
The girl was subjected to hours of inhuman torture and humiliation. According to the woman in whose house the saboteur was tortured, Zoya endured the abuse courageously, did not beg for mercy, and gave the enemy no information. All residents of the village of Petrishchevo were driven to witness the public execution, and the fearless eighteen-year-old partisan managed to address her compatriots with a fiery speech. To intimidate local residents, her body was left hanging in the square for about a month, and drunken fascists amused themselves by stabbing it with bayonets.
Almost at the same time, Zoya’s comrade in the sabotage group, twenty-two-year-old Vera Voloshina, died tragically. Residents of the Golovkovo state farm, near which the girl was captured, recalled that although she was bleeding and had been beaten half to death with rifle butts, she carried herself proudly before her death and, with the noose already around her neck, sang “The Internationale.”
Soviet women
not only performed remarkable acts of heroism at the front. In captivity, too, they astonished Hitler’s troops with their moral qualities.
When women arrived at a concentration camp, they were all examined by a gynecologist to detect venereal disease. German doctors were surprised to find, according to the article, that more than 90 percent of unmarried Russian women under the age of twenty-one were virgins. The figure was strikingly different from comparable data for Western Europe. Soviet girls, the article says, demonstrated high moral standards even during the war, when a woman was constantly surrounded by men and was the object of their close attention.
While imprisoned, Soviet women impressed others with their resilience. Female prisoners were forced to exist in appalling sanitary conditions, without the slightest possibility of observing basic hygiene. They also performed heavy physical labor and were often subjected to sexual violence; attempts to resist were punished severely. Another characteristic attributed to Soviet female prisoners of war was defiance. Upon arriving at Ravensbrück concentration camp, Russian women demanded compliance with the Geneva Convention, refused to go to work, and declared hunger strikes. When punished by being made to march for several hours around the parade ground, they turned the punishment into a triumph, marching while singing in chorus, “Arise, vast country…”

Lieutenant Vladimir Gelfand, a young Jew from Ukraine, kept his notes from 1941 until the end of the war with unusual candor, despite the ban then in force against keeping diaries in the Soviet army.
His son Vitaly, who allowed me to read the manuscript, found the diary while sorting through his father’s papers after his death. The diary was available online, but is now being published in Russia in book form for the first time. Two abridged editions of the diary had previously appeared in Germany and Sweden.
The diary tells of the lack of order and discipline in the regular forces: meager rations, lice, routine antisemitism, and endless theft. As Gelfand relates, soldiers even stole their comrades’ boots.
In February 1945 Gelfand’s military unit was stationed near the Oder River, preparing for the advance on Berlin. He recalls how his comrades surrounded and captured a German women’s battalion.
“The day before yesterday a women’s battalion was operating on the left flank. It was smashed to pieces, and the captured German bitches declared themselves avengers for husbands killed at the front. I do not know what was done with them, but the villains ought to have been executed mercilessly,” Vladimir Gelfand wrote.
One of Gelfand’s most revealing accounts concerns April 25, when he was already in Berlin. There Gelfand rode a bicycle for the first time in his life. Riding along the bank of the Spree, he saw a group of women dragging suitcases and bundles somewhere.
In February 1945 Gelfand’s military unit was stationed near the Oder River, preparing for the advance on Berlin.
“I asked the German women where they lived, in broken German, and asked why they had left their homes, and in horror they told me of the grief inflicted on them by the frontline troops on the first night after the Red Army came here,” the diarist writes.
“They poked me here,”
a beautiful German woman
explained, lifting her skirt, “all night, and there were so many of them. I was a virgin,” she sighed and began to cry. “They ruined my youth. Some of them were old, some pimply, and they all climbed on me, all poked me. There were at least twenty of them, yes, yes,” and she burst into tears.
“They raped my daughter in front of me,” the poor mother added. “They may come again and rape my girl again.” At this everyone was horrified again, and sobbing swept from corner to corner of the basement where my hosts had brought me. “Stay here,” the girl suddenly threw herself at me, “you will sleep with me. You can do anything you want with me, but only you alone!” Gelfand writes in his diary.
“The time for revenge has come!”
By that point German soldiers had stained themselves on Soviet territory with terrible crimes committed over nearly four years.
Vladimir Gelfand encountered evidence of those crimes as his unit fought its way toward Germany.
“When every day there are killings, every day there are wounded, when they pass through villages destroyed by the fascists… Dad has many descriptions of villages that were destroyed, even the children, very small Jewish children, one- and two-year-olds… and this was not happening for a short time, it went on for years. People marched on and saw it. And they marched with one purpose—to take revenge and kill,” says Vladimir Gelfand’s son Vitaly.
Vitaly Gelfand discovered this diary only after his father’s death.
The Wehrmacht, according to Nazi ideology, was supposed to be a well-organized force of Aryans who would not stoop to sexual contact with “Untermenschen”—“subhumans.”
But this prohibition was ignored, says Higher School of Economics historian Oleg Budnitsky.
The German command was so concerned about the spread of venereal disease among the troops that it organized a network of military brothels in the occupied territories.
Vladimir Gelfand wrote his diary with remarkable candor at a time when doing so was extremely dangerous.
It is difficult to find direct evidence of how German soldiers treated Russian women. Many victims simply did not survive.
But at the German-Russian Museum in Berlin, its director Jörg Morré showed me a photograph from a German soldier’s personal album taken in Crimea.
The photograph shows the body of a woman sprawled on the ground.
“It looks as though she was killed during a rape or afterward. Her skirt is pulled up and her hands cover her face,” the museum director says.
“It is a shocking photograph. At the museum we argued about whether such pictures should be exhibited. This is war; this is sexual violence in the Soviet Union under the Germans. We show the war. We do not merely talk about war, we show it,” says Jörg Morré.
When the Red Army entered what the Soviet press of the time called “the lair of the fascist beast,” Berlin, posters encouraged the soldiers’ fury: “Soldier, you are on German soil. The time for revenge has come!”
The political department of the 19th Army, which advanced on Berlin along the Baltic coast, declared that a true Soviet soldier was so full of hatred that the very thought of sexual contact with German women would disgust him. Once again, however, the soldiers proved their ideologues wrong.
Historian Antony Beevor, while researching his book Berlin: The Downfall, published in 2002, found reports in the Russian state archives concerning an epidemic of sexual violence on German territory. These reports were sent to Lavrentiy Beria by NKVD officials at the end of 1944.
“They were passed on to Stalin,” Beevor says. “You can tell from the markings whether they were read or not. They report mass rapes in East Prussia and describe German women trying to kill themselves and their children in order to escape that fate.”
“Dwellers of the Underground”
Another wartime diary, kept by the fiancée of a German soldier, describes how some women adapted to this terrifying situation in an effort to survive.
Beginning on April 20, 1945, the unnamed woman set down observations remarkable for their ruthless honesty, perceptiveness, and occasional gallows humor.
The diarist describes herself as “a pale blonde, always wearing the same winter coat.” She draws vivid pictures of the lives of her neighbors in the air-raid shelter beneath their apartment building.
Among her female neighbors is “a young man in gray trousers and thick-rimmed spectacles who, on closer examination, turns out to be a woman,” as well as three elderly sisters, “all three seamstresses, huddled together into one big black pudding.”
Watches and bicycles were common trophies in Berlin.
As they waited for the approaching Red Army units, the women joked: “Better a Russian on top of me than a Yankee over me,” meaning that it was better to be raped than to die in an American carpet-bombing raid.
But when soldiers entered their basement and tried to drag women out, the residents begged the diarist to use her knowledge of Russian to complain to the Soviet command.
In the ruined streets she managed to find a Soviet officer. He shrugged. Despite Stalin’s decree prohibiting violence against civilians, he said, “it happens anyway.”
The officer nevertheless went down with her into the basement and reprimanded the soldiers. One of them flew into a rage. “What are you talking about? Look what the Germans did to our women!” he shouted. “They took my sister and…” The officer calmed him and led the soldiers outside.
But when the diarist stepped into the corridor to check whether they had gone, soldiers who had been waiting seized her and brutally raped her, nearly strangling her. Her terrified neighbors—the “dwellers of the underground,” as she calls them—hid in the basement and locked the door behind them.
“At last the two iron bolts opened. Everyone stared at me,” she writes. “My stockings are down, my hands are holding the remains of my garter belt. I begin to scream: ‘You pigs! I was raped here twice in succession and you leave me lying here like a piece of dirt!’”
Eventually the diarist decided that she needed to find one “wolf” who would protect her from further gang rapes by the “male beasts.”
She found an officer from Leningrad and shared her bed with him. Gradually the relationship between aggressor and victim became less violent, more reciprocal, and more ambiguous. The German woman and the Soviet officer even discussed literature and the meaning of life.
“It cannot in any way be claimed that the major is raping me,” she writes. “Why am I doing this? For bacon, sugar, candles, canned meat? To some extent I am sure that is so. But I also like the major, and the less he wants from me as a man, the more I like him as a human being.”
Many of her neighbors made similar arrangements with the victors in defeated Berlin.
Some German women found a way to adapt to this terrible situation.
When the diary was published in Germany in 1959 under the title A Woman in Berlin, this candid account provoked a wave of accusations that it had dishonored German women. It is therefore unsurprising that the author, anticipating such a response, demanded that the diary not be published again until after her death.
Eisenhower: Shoot Them on the Spot
Rape was not only a problem for the Red Army.
Bob Lilly, a historian at Northern Kentucky University, was able to gain access to U.S. court-martial archives.
His book Taken by Force provoked so much controversy that at first no American publisher would agree to publish it, and the first edition appeared in France.
According to Lilly’s approximate calculations, about 14,000 rapes were committed by American soldiers in England, France, and Germany between 1942 and 1945.
“There were very few rapes in England, but as soon as American soldiers crossed the English Channel their number rose sharply,” Lilly says.
According to him, rape became not only an image problem but also a military-discipline problem. “Eisenhower said to shoot soldiers at the scene of the crime and report the executions in military newspapers such as Stars and Stripes. Germany was the peak of this phenomenon,” he says.
—Were soldiers executed for rape?
—Oh yes!
—But not in Germany?
—No. Not a single soldier was executed for the rape or murder of German civilians, Lilly acknowledges.
Today historians continue to investigate sexual crimes committed by Allied troops in Germany.
For many years the subject of sexual violence by Allied troops—American, British, French, and Soviet soldiers—on German territory was officially suppressed. Few people reported it, and even fewer wanted to listen.
Silence
Such things are difficult to discuss in society in general. In East Germany, moreover, criticizing the Soviet heroes who had defeated fascism was considered almost blasphemous.
In West Germany, meanwhile, the guilt Germans felt over the crimes of Nazism overshadowed discussion of the suffering of their own people.
But in 2008 the film Anonyma—A Woman in Berlin, based on the Berlin diary and starring Nina Hoss, was released in Germany.
The film was a revelation for Germans and prompted many women to speak about what had happened to them. One of those women was Ingeborg Bullert.
Now ninety years old, Ingeborg lives in Hamburg in an apartment filled with photographs of cats and books about the theater. In 1945 she was twenty. She dreamed of becoming an actress and lived with her mother on a fairly fashionable street in Berlin’s Charlottenburg district.
“I thought they were going to kill me,” says Ingeborg Bullert.
When the Soviet assault on the city began, she hid in the basement of her building, as did the author of A Woman in Berlin.
“Suddenly tanks appeared on our street; the bodies of Russian and German soldiers were lying everywhere,” she recalls. “I remember the terrifying drawn-out sound of the falling Russian rockets. We called them Stalinorgels—‘Stalin’s organs.’”
One day, during a pause between bombardments, Ingeborg climbed out of the basement and ran upstairs to get a piece of rope that she had been using as a lamp wick.
“Suddenly I saw two Russians pointing pistols at me,” she says. “One of them made me undress and raped me. Then they changed places and the other raped me. I thought I was going to die, that they would kill me.”
Ingeborg did not tell anyone at the time what had happened. She remained silent about it for several decades because talking about it would have been too difficult. “My mother liked to boast that her daughter had not been touched,” she recalls.
A wave of abortions
But many women in Berlin were raped. Ingeborg remembers that immediately after the war women between fifteen and fifty-five were ordered to undergo tests for venereal disease.
“To receive ration cards you needed a medical certificate, and I remember that all the doctors’ waiting rooms where these certificates were issued were full of women,” she recalls.
What was the true scale of the rapes? The figures most often cited are 100,000 women in Berlin and two million throughout Germany. These highly disputed figures were extrapolated from the scant medical records that have survived.
Files of medical documents
These medical records from 1945 survived almost miraculously.
In just one Berlin district, 995 requests for abortions were approved within half a year.
At a former military factory that now houses the state archive, staff member Martin Luchterhand shows me a bundle of blue cardboard files.
They contain records of abortions from June to October 1945 in Neukölln, one of Berlin’s twenty-four districts. Their survival intact is something of a small miracle.
At that time abortion was prohibited in Germany under Section 218 of the criminal code. Luchterhand says, however, that for a brief period after the war women were permitted to terminate pregnancies. The exceptional situation was connected with the mass rapes of 1945.
From June 1945 through 1946, 995 requests for abortion were approved in this Berlin district alone. The files contain more than a thousand pages of varying colors and sizes. One girl, writing in rounded childlike handwriting, states that she was raped at home in the living room in front of her parents.
Bread instead of revenge
For some soldiers, especially when drunk, women became trophies just like watches or bicycles. Others behaved very differently. In Moscow I met ninety-two-year-old veteran Yuri Lyashenko, who remembers soldiers giving bread to Germans instead of taking revenge.
Yuri Lyashenko says Soviet soldiers in Berlin behaved in different ways.
“Of course we couldn’t feed everyone, could we? But what we had, we shared with the children. The little children were so frightened, their eyes so terrified… You felt sorry for the children,” he recalls.
Wearing a jacket covered with orders and medals, Yuri Lyashenko invites me into his small apartment on the top floor of a high-rise building and offers me cognac and boiled eggs.
He tells me that he wanted to become an engineer but was drafted into the army and, like Vladimir Gelfand, fought all the way through the war to Berlin.
As he pours cognac into glasses, he proposes a toast to peace. Toasts to peace often sound rehearsed, but here one senses that the words come from the heart.
We talk about the beginning of the war, when his leg was nearly amputated, and about what he felt when he saw the red flag over the Reichstag. After a while I dare to ask him about rape.
“I don’t know; in our unit there was nothing like that… Of course such cases apparently occurred depending on the person, on the people,” the war veteran says. “You might run into one sort… One man helps, another abuses… It isn’t written on his face; you don’t know him.”
Looking back at the past
We will probably never know the true scale of the rapes. Records of Soviet military tribunals and many other documents remain closed. The State Duma recently approved a law “on encroachments upon historical memory,” under which anyone who disparages the USSR’s contribution to the victory over fascism may face a fine and up to five years’ imprisonment.
Young historian Vera Dubina of a humanities university in Moscow says that she knew nothing about these rapes until she received a scholarship to study in Berlin. After studying in Germany she wrote a paper on the subject, but was unable to publish it.
“Russian media reacted very aggressively,” she says. “People want to know only about our glorious victory in the Great Patriotic War, and now it is becoming increasingly difficult to conduct serious research.”
Soviet field kitchens distributed food to Berlin residents.
History is often rewritten to suit the political climate. That is precisely why eyewitness testimony is so important: the testimony of those who have dared to speak about the subject now, in old age, and the accounts of people who were young then and recorded what they witnessed during the war.
Vitaly, the son of army diarist Vladimir Gelfand, says that many Soviet soldiers displayed great heroism during the Second World War. But that is not the whole story, he believes.
“If people do not want to know the truth, want to be mistaken, and want to say that everything was beautiful and noble, that is foolish; it is self-deception,” he reminds us. “The whole world understands this, and Russia understands it. Even those behind these laws about distorting the past understand it too. We cannot move into the future until we have dealt with the past.”

German fascist villains continue their bloody crimes against peaceful inhabitants of the occupied Soviet districts. In the forest beyond the village of Belaya, Vitebsk Region, Hitler’s troops shot eighty-six elderly people, women, and children. Residents of villages in Leningrad Region liberated from the German invaders told of Hitlerite atrocities. In the village of Peski, German fascist murderers hanged collective farmer Ivan Morozov and burned his house because he had hidden his daughter from a German officer who wanted to rape her. Sixteen-year-old Nastya Zemskova struck the German officer who was harassing her and said: “You will see neither Moscow nor Leningrad, just as a pig will never see the sky.” Hitler’s troops seized the girl and took her away. Nothing has been known of her fate since then. Before the German occupation the village of Cherny Ruchey had 250 inhabitants. The Germans drove more than one hundred people away to forced labor in Germany. Hitler’s troops tortured and shot several dozen civilians. Many collective farmers, men and women, died of hunger and deprivation. At present only… remain in the village. (Sovinformburo)

German fascist villains devastated and destroyed the village of Podmoshye, Smolensk Region. Hitler’s troops spared neither women nor children. There is not a single family in the village that did not suffer at the hands of Hitler’s murderers. Teacher Anna Konyukhova was shot by the bandits because she resisted a German who tried to rape her. The executioners tortured and killed civilians Mikhail Stepanenko, Aleksandr Stepanenko, Boris Barsukov and his daughter, Vasily Feoktistov, and twelve-year-old boys Alexei Ignatov and Dmitry Ivanov. The Germans subjected eighty-five-year-old Kozhurov and his wife to savage torture. During interrogations the Germans beat them, demanding that they reveal the location of the partisans. The Soviet patriots endured all the torture, died martyrs’ deaths, but did not betray the partisans or fellow villagers connected with them. (Sovinformburo) *

Below is an official report on the atrocities of the German fascist villains in the village of Kuban, Oryol Region: “From the day the German invaders broke into the village of Kuban, a life of hard labor began for us. For no reason the Germans shot collective farmers Ivan Marokhin, Alexei Yakushin, Foma Melnikov, Ivan Pisarev, and many others. Hitler’s vermin raped Varvara Zh., abused Marina Melnikova, and then killed her. More than two hundred villagers were held in the cellars of the German commandant’s office, where they were beaten and subjected to every kind of abuse. The fascists disfigured our village, destroyed the school, the dairy farm, collective-farm buildings, and many peasant houses. There is not a single person in the whole village who was not robbed by Hitler’s bandits, and not a single house without traces of German robbery and destruction. We are certain that the Red Army will avenge our suffering on the German fascist murderers and cleanse our native Soviet land of fascist carrion.” The report was signed by village-council member Ivan Korolyov, teacher Onisia Rudakova, collective farmers Aleksandr Khokha, Oksana Lavrukhina, and others. In the same village the fascists shot, without any reason, collective-farm woman Irina Vasilyevna Mosolova, the mother of four small children. In the village of Zaramushki the fascists shot collective-farm women Metlova, aged sixty-seven; Yekaterina Goloshchokina, sixty; Agrafena Sokolova, forty; Yakov Kordnov, fifty-eight; and others. In the village of Ovsyannikovo the Germans captured several wounded Red Army soldiers. They stripped them of their clothing and footwear and locked them in a cold barn. When leaving the village the brutes shot all the prisoners. Three soldiers had their eyes gouged out, their shins broken, stars cut into their cheeks, and their throats pierced with bayonets. Collective farmer Ivan Gavrilovich Teryokhin was walking through the village of Puchki with his wife, Polina Borisovna. Several German soldiers seized Polina and raped her one after another before her husband’s eyes, then killed her. Collective farmer Teryokhin, who tried to defend his wife, was also shot. The German invaders robbed the population, taking everything that caught their eye. Thus, for example, in the village of Nikolskoye the Hitlerite robbers took from Agrippina Sergeyevna Sergeyeva a mattress, a samovar, a kettle, tea dishes, a basket of flour, matches, sugar, a woman’s jacket, an axe, a saw, children’s toys, and even a milk strainer…
Residents of villages in Rostov Region liberated from the German fascist invaders report unheard-of atrocities and wholesale looting by Hitler’s robber army. In the village of Novospasovka, several German soldiers settled in the home of collective-farm woman Elena Gamova. In the evening they held a drinking bout. Her two-year-old son woke up and began to cry. One of the fascist brutes tore the child from his mother’s arms and shoved him into a red-hot stove. In the same village the Germans doused peasant woman Marta Kovpak with gasoline and set her on fire. In the settlement of Generalskaya the fascists raped and then tortured and shot Nadezhda Gurtova and her fourteen-year-old daughter. (Sovinformburo) *

18.11.41:
German fascist villains continue violence and abuse against peaceful residents of towns and villages in Belarus. A detachment of German soldiers arriving in the settlement of Kostyukovka took all the peasants’ property. Peasant woman Ksenia Drigulina asked a German officer to leave her four children’s underwear. The enraged fascist beat the woman and then shot her. German soldiers threw all four of Drigulina’s children into a cellar and covered them with earth. In the village of Nerki the fascists raped and tortured to death peasant women Zhigalova, Serikova, and Urupina. In the village of Gorby the fascist brutes brutally tortured six fifteen-year-old girls to death. In the town of Yelsk the fascists put five hundred local residents on a barge and took them to the middle of the Pripyat River. The prisoners were given no food for five days. German soldiers then sank the barge with the people still on it. (Sovinformburo) *

German fascist villains continue to rob and kill peaceful residents in the occupied districts. After seizing the village of Yakymivka, on the very first day the fascists shot Nikolai Mikhailov, Eftei Ushakov, his twelve-year-old daughter, and disabled Burtsev. A few days later the occupiers shot a large group of collective farmers: seventy-year-old men Yakov Romanenko and Prokhor Torgashov, sixty-year-old Aleksandra Kovalyova, Anna Muskovit, and others. The fascist villains brutally abused Agafonova. They raped her, then subjected her to agonizing torture, cut off her breasts, and stabbed her all over the body. The fascist brutes did not spare even Agafonova’s small children. As they prepared to leave, Hitler’s bandits killed her four-year-old son Vasya and… (Sovinformburo)

Reports continue to arrive about the terrible crimes of fascist bandits. In the settlement of Vasilievka, Oryol Region, drunken German soldiers forced girls whom they had raped and beaten to dance. At that moment pregnant collective-farm woman Anna Larionova was walking down the street. The fascists demanded that she dance as well. Larionova tried to refuse, pointing to her pregnancy. An enraged man wearing a corporal’s insignia kicked the woman in the abdomen. Larionova lost consciousness and went into labor. The fascist brutes forbade the peasant women to assist her. The unfortunate woman gave birth to a dead child. (Sovinformburo) *

Hitlerite cannibals continue their lawlessness and atrocities in Soviet districts they have seized.
In the villages of Glinyanaya and Dikovka, Kirovohrad Region, the fascists took all agricultural products and household belongings from the population. The villages of Vypolzovo and Karpylivka, Oster District, Chernihiv Region, were completely devastated. Fascist villains everywhere carried out wholesale looting and dealt with defenseless civilians with unheard-of cruelty. In the village of Slobidka, Chornobyl District, Kyiv Region, the fascists demanded milk from collective-farm woman Nechuiko. She replied: “You already took the cow—where am I supposed to get milk for you?” For this the fascists beat her half to death and then burned her house. Residents of the village of Novo-Vasylivka, liberated from the Germans, report the criminal acts of the fascist brutes. Collective-farm woman Fedosya Matyukha says: “The fascist murderers burst into my house, seized my husband Onufriy, and took him away. The next day I found his body in a ditch. He was all cut up and mutilated, his eyes gouged out.” Collective farmer Vasily Shnyryov, ill with tuberculosis, was tortured for a long time. They stabbed him with bayonets, cut him, and then shot him. Collective-farm woman Maria Pryadko says: “The Germans looted the entire village. Like dogs, they prowled through the cottages and took everything. In my house the fascists knocked out the window frames, smashed the mirror, took the cloth, all the cast-iron pots and buckets, and trampled the vegetable garden. My seven children and I hid from the Germans in a pit. A drunken scoundrel came over and began shooting into the pit. Only by a miracle did we survive.” Soldiers dragged a sewing machine, two tablecloths, and pillows out of collective farmer Petro Kozlov’s house. In other houses the fascists took gramophones, bicycles, blankets, and clothing.
Collective-farm woman Tetiana Halushko says: “For three days the Germans ran riot in our village. How much misery they caused, how much grief and tears they brought! They destroyed and burned thirteen cottages. The Germans looted and set fire to Ivan Puchko’s cottage. The brutes seized women and raped them. Hitler’s soldiers rob the population of occupied Soviet districts and brutally abuse elderly people, women, and children… In the village of Zakharivka the Germans hanged fourteen collective farmers for refusing to reveal where their daughters were. After occupying the villages of Yuryevo and Berezniki, west of Staraya Russa, the Germans confiscated and slaughtered all the population’s livestock and poultry. After loading the stolen food onto carts, the Germans harnessed collective farmers to them, including old women and elderly men, and forced them to pull the loads to a neighboring village. In the village of Monino a drunken German soldier who broke into the home of peasant Nikolai Kurgayev tried to rape the mistress of the house. Her husband stood up for his wife and was shot on the spot.
In the village of Milyutin the Germans arrested twenty-four collective farmers and took them to a neighboring village. Among those arrested was thirteen-year-old Anastasia Davydova. After throwing the peasants into a dark barn, the fascists began torturing them, demanding information about the partisans. Everyone remained silent. In the village of Hryvnia, Rzhyshchiv District, the Germans mocked a sixty-year-old collective-farm worker by making him run under gunfire. The fascists shot the unfortunate old man through both legs. In the occupied districts of Kirovohrad and Dnipropetrovsk regions, the German command announced that all collective-farm property belonged to the Germans and that peasants who attempted to take it would be shot. Only recently, the article continues, did researchers establish that in ten European concentration camps the Nazis forced female prisoners into prostitution in special brothels, writes Volodymyr Hinda in the Archive section of issue No. 31 of Korrespondent magazine dated August 9, 2013.
Torment and death, or prostitution—this was the choice the Nazis imposed on European and Slavic women who found themselves in concentration camps. From the several hundred girls who chose the second option, camp administrations staffed brothels in ten camps—not only camps where prisoners were used as forced labor, but also camps intended for mass extermination.
In Soviet and contemporary European historiography, the subject had practically not existed. Only a couple of American scholars—Wendy Gertjejanssen and Jessica Hughes—had addressed certain aspects of the problem in their academic work.
At the beginning of the twenty-first century German cultural historian Robert Sommer began painstakingly reconstructing information about the sexual “conveyor belts” that operated in the horrifying conditions of German concentration camps and death factories.
The result of nine years of research was Sommer’s 2009 book
The Concentration Camp Brothel,
which shocked European readers. The work also formed the basis for the Berlin exhibition Sex Work in Concentration Camps.
Bedside Motivation
“Legalized sex” appeared in fascist concentration camps in 1942. The SS organized brothels in ten institutions, mostly so-called labor camps: Mauthausen in Austria and its Gusen subcamp, and Flossenbürg, Buchenwald, Neuengamme, Sachsenhausen, and Dora-Mittelbau in Germany. In addition, the institution of coerced prostitutes was introduced in three death camps intended for the extermination of prisoners: Auschwitz-Birkenau in occupied Poland and its satellite Monowitz, as well as Dachau in Germany.
The idea of establishing camp brothels belonged to Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler. Researchers say he had been impressed by the system of incentives used in Soviet corrective-labor camps to increase prisoner productivity.
Imperial War Museum
One of the barracks at Ravensbrück, Nazi Germany’s largest women’s concentration camp.
Himmler decided to adopt that experience while adding to the list of “incentives” something that the Soviet system did not have—“reward” prostitution. The SS chief was convinced that the right to visit a brothel, together with other bonuses such as cigarettes, cash or camp vouchers, and improved rations, could make prisoners work more and work better.
In practice, the right to visit such establishments belonged mainly to prisoner functionaries who served as camp guards. There was a logical explanation: most male prisoners were exhausted and did not even think about sexual desire.
Hughes notes that the proportion of male prisoners using the brothels was extremely small. In Buchenwald, according to her data, where about 12,500 people were held in September 1943, only 0.77 percent of prisoners visited the brothel barracks over three months. The situation was similar in Dachau, where by September 1944 prostitutes had been used by 0.75 percent of the 22,000 prisoners held there.
A Hard Fate
Up to two hundred sex slaves worked in the brothels at any one time. The largest number at one location—about twenty women—was held in the brothel at Auschwitz.
Only female prisoners were used as brothel workers, usually women considered attractive and aged between seventeen and thirty-five. About 60–70 percent were German by origin and belonged to those whom the Reich authorities labeled “antisocial elements.” Some had worked as prostitutes before being sent to concentration camps and therefore agreed without much difficulty to similar work behind barbed wire, even passing their experience on to less experienced companions.
About one third of the sex slaves were recruited by the SS from prisoners of other nationalities—Polish, Ukrainian, or Belarusian women. Jewish women were not allowed to do this work, and Jewish male prisoners were forbidden to visit the brothels.
The workers wore a special identifying mark—black triangles sewn onto the sleeves of their prison uniforms.
About one third of the sex slaves were recruited by the SS from prisoners of other nationalities—Polish, Ukrainian, or Belarusian women.
Some girls agreed to the “work” voluntarily. A former worker in the medical unit at Ravensbrück—the Third Reich’s largest women’s concentration camp, in which as many as 130,000 people were held—recalled that some women volunteered for the brothel because they were promised release after six months of work.
Spanish resistance member Lola Casadel, who was sent to the same camp in 1944, recalled how the head of their barracks announced: “Anyone who wants to work in the brothel, come to me. And keep in mind: if there are no volunteers, we will have to use force.”
The threat was not empty. Sheina Epstein, a Jewish woman from the Kaunas ghetto, recalled that in the camp the women in the barracks lived in
constant fear
of guards who regularly raped prisoners. The raids took place at night: drunken men walked along the bunks with flashlights, selecting the most attractive victim.
“Their joy knew no bounds when they discovered that a girl was a virgin. Then they laughed loudly and called their colleagues,” Epstein said.
Having lost their honor and sometimes even their will to resist, some girls went to the brothels, understanding that this was their last hope of survival.
“The most important thing was that we managed to get out of [the camps] Bergen-Belsen and Ravensbrück,” former Dora-Mittelbau prisoner Lieselotte B. said of her “bedside career.” “The main thing was somehow to survive.”
With Aryan Punctuality
After the initial selection, the workers were brought to special barracks in the concentration camps where they were to be used. To make the exhausted prisoners look more or less presentable, they were placed in the infirmary. There SS medical personnel gave them calcium injections; they took disinfecting baths, ate, and even tanned under quartz lamps.
There was no compassion in any of this, only calculation: their bodies were being prepared for hard work. As soon as the rehabilitation cycle ended, the girls became part of the sex conveyor belt. The work was daily; there was rest only if there was no electricity or water, if an air-raid alert was declared, or while speeches by German leader Adolf Hitler were being broadcast on the radio.
The conveyor belt ran like clockwork and strictly according to schedule. In Buchenwald, for example, the prostitutes got up at 7:00 a.m. and spent the period until 7:00 p.m. on themselves: they ate breakfast, exercised, underwent daily medical examinations, did laundry and cleaning, and ate lunch. By camp standards there was so much food that prostitutes even traded food for clothes and other items. Everything ended with dinner; from seven in the evening a two-hour work shift began. Camp prostitutes could stay away from work only if they were menstruating or ill.

The procedure for providing sexual services, beginning with the selection of men, was regulated in minute detail. Women could mainly be obtained by so-called camp functionaries—interned prisoners who performed internal security and supervisory duties.
At first, the brothel doors were open exclusively to Germans or representatives of peoples living within the territory of the Reich, as well as Spaniards and Czechs. Later the circle of visitors was expanded; only Jews, Soviet prisoners of war, and ordinary internees remained excluded. Visitor logs from the Mauthausen brothel, meticulously maintained by the administration, show that 60 percent of the clients were common criminals.
Men who wanted to use the sexual services first had to obtain permission from the camp leadership. They then bought an admission ticket for two Reichsmarks—slightly less than the price of twenty cigarettes sold in the canteen. A quarter of this amount went to the woman herself, and only if she was German.
At a camp brothel, clients first entered a waiting room where their details were checked. They then underwent a medical examination and received preventive injections. The visitor was next given the number of the room he was to enter. Sexual intercourse took place there. Only the “missionary position” was permitted. Conversation was discouraged.
Magdalena Walter, one of the women held in the Buchenwald brothel, described its operation this way: “We had one bath with a toilet, where the women went to wash before the next visitor came. Immediately after washing, a client appeared. Everything worked like a conveyor belt; men were not allowed to remain in the room for more than fifteen minutes.”
According to surviving documents, a prostitute received six to fifteen men in one evening.
Putting the Body to Work
Legalized prostitution benefited the authorities financially. During its first six months of operation, the Buchenwald brothel alone earned 14,000–19,000 Reichsmarks. The money went into the account of Germany’s economic administration.
The Germans used women not only as objects of sexual gratification but also as material for scientific research. Brothel inmates carefully monitored hygiene because any venereal disease could cost them their lives: infected prostitutes in the camps were not treated; experiments were conducted on them instead.
Imperial War Museum
Liberated prisoners of Bergen-Belsen camp.
Scientists of the Reich did this in accordance with Hitler’s wishes. Even before the war he had called syphilis one of the most dangerous diseases in Europe, capable of producing catastrophe. The Führer believed that only peoples who found a way to cure the disease quickly would survive. In pursuit of a miracle cure, the SS turned infected women into living laboratories. They did not remain alive for long: intensive experiments quickly brought the prisoners to painful deaths.
Researchers found a number of cases in which even healthy prostitutes were handed over to sadistic medical personnel.
Pregnant women were not spared in the camps either. In some places they were killed immediately; elsewhere abortions were performed and five weeks later the women were sent “back into circulation.” Abortions were carried out at different stages of pregnancy and by different methods, which itself became part of the research. Some prisoners were allowed to give birth, but only so that experiments could determine how long a newborn could survive without food.
Despised Prisoners
According to former Buchenwald prisoner Albert van Dijk of the Netherlands, other prisoners despised the camp prostitutes, disregarding the fact that brutal camp conditions and the attempt to save their lives had forced them into the “trade.” The work of the brothel inmates itself resembled repeated rape every day.
Some women tried to defend their honor even after being placed in a brothel. Walter, for example, arrived at Buchenwald a virgin and, once forced into the role of a prostitute, tried to defend herself from her first client with scissors. The attempt failed, and camp records indicate that on the same day the former virgin was made to satisfy six men. Walter endured it because she knew that otherwise she faced the gas chamber, crematorium, or a barracks for brutal experiments.
Not everyone had the strength to survive the violence. According to researchers, some women in camp brothels took their own lives; others lost their sanity. Some survived but remained prisoners of
psychological problems
for the rest of their lives. Physical liberation did not free them from the burden of the past, and after the war former camp prostitutes were forced to hide their histories. This is why scholars have collected relatively little documented testimony about life in these brothels.
“It is one thing to say, ‘I worked as a carpenter’ or ‘I built roads,’ and quite another to say, ‘I was forced to work as a prostitute,’” notes Insa Eschebach, director of the memorial at the former Ravensbrück camp.
