German women try to escape the collapse of the Reich and its consequences. There is innumerable evidence of rapes committed by Red Army troops in Berlin. Although Russian media usually describe these crimes as “Western myths,” the truth is that they did occur, as British historian Antony Beevor shows in his book Berlin: The Downfall 1945. Beevor found documents concerning sexual violence in the archives of the Russian Federation. Many Berlin women realized that, in order to protect themselves from repeated rape, it was better to find a “Russian wolf” — preferably a Soviet officer — and enter into a sexual relationship with him so that other soldiers would refrain from harassing them and leave them alone. ![]() Vladimir Gelfand, a young Russian lieutenant of Jewish origin, wrote with striking frankness about the horrors he repeatedly witnessed during the war. In his diary, Gelfand recounts what happened in Berlin when he encountered a group of German women carrying suitcases and bundles who confessed to him that they had been brutally raped by his own comrades. The lieutenant remembered that one of the girls threw herself at him and told him that he could sleep with her: “Do whatever you want with me, but only you!” Vitaly Gelfand, who discovered his father’s diary after his death, recalls that his father had seen Nazi soldiers destroy entire villages, killing even small children. There is no doubt that Nazi brutality in Russia contributed significantly to the brutality Soviet soldiers displayed toward German women during their advance on Berlin. ![]() Muy Historia, 20 June 2025.
