German“Annual Reports for German History: New Series, 60th Year, 2008”
Brief description
The 60th volume of the Annual Reports presents scholarly publications on German history from the year 2008 together with supplements from earlier reporting years in bibliographical form. The Annual Reports for German History project at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities provides comprehensive information on national and international scholarship concerning German history. Its coverage extends from the beginnings of German history to the present and also includes literature on the Roman-Germanic early period.
The bibliography documents scholarly publications in the form of monographs, edited volumes, journal articles, source editions, reference works and bibliographies. So-called grey literature, which is not available through the regular book trade, is also included wherever possible.
Unpublished dissertations and habilitation theses, reviews and annotations, conference reports, tributes and obituaries are not recorded. The selection and indexing of literature are based on examination of the publications themselves. Two indexes, structured according to standards used in historical scholarship, support detailed research: an author and title index, and a subject index that also includes place names and personal names appearing in the recorded literature.
Preface
The present 60th volume of the Annual Reports for German History, New Series, contains nearly 26,000 records of scholarly publications on German history from the reporting year 2008 and the two preceding years. Editorial work on the volume was completed on 30 April 2009. The introductory section contains information on the thematic profile and formal inclusion criteria, a list of the journals evaluated, an overview of the classification system and a statistical analysis of recorded titles by historical period and subject group.
The systematic arrangement of entries in the volume provides established access to literature on individual topics and periods. The author and title index, together with the combined index of places, persons and subjects, allows targeted searches for individual records. For more complex research or searches extending across several reporting years, the continuously updated online database of the Annual Reports for German History is available free of charge at www.jdg-online.de.
Through the retrospective conversion of older printed volumes, the database had by then grown to approximately 450,000 title records beginning with the reporting year 1974. Compiling such comprehensive bibliographical documentation of German history, both in printed volumes and in the database, would not have been possible without close and trusting cooperation with libraries, especially the Berlin State Library, the German National Library in Leipzig, the Bavarian State Library, and the library of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
Special thanks are due to the project’s scholarly and technical staff members Ursula Jakiel, Ulrike Reichhoff and Detlef Gritzke, who were responsible for the formal bibliographical description of the titles, and to Lutz Sattler, who prepared the typesetting of the print manuscript. The editors also thank the management and editorial staff of Akademie Verlag, the members of the Annual Reports for German History Commission chaired by Heinz Schilling, and the leadership of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
