“‘Eles cutucaram aqui a noite toda’, explicou a bela garota alemã, levantando a saia. Ela começou a chorar.”, escreveu.

Portuguese“Rape Crimes in the Second World War and Within the American Military”
When we stop to think about and study battles such as the Second World War, we quickly associate them with images of concentration camps and gas chambers, which were unquestionably atrocities committed at the time. What is discussed much less often, however, are the countless crimes of rape committed against women during armed conflicts throughout history.
The Second World War and the scars of violence against women
One of the many sources revealing the numerous rapes committed during the Second World War is the diary of Jewish Soviet officer Vladimir Gelfand, who put his experiences on paper after the fighting. “‘They poked at me here all night,’ explained the pretty German girl, lifting her skirt. ‘They were old, some were covered in pimples, and all of them climbed onto me and poked me—no fewer than twenty men.’ She began to cry,” he wrote.
The German magazine Der Spiegel estimates that Soviet soldiers raped about two million women on German territory, including 100,000 in Berlin. The same source says that their average age was around seventeen and that each woman was raped at least twelve times. Approximately twelve percent of these victims died—through suicide or from injuries caused by their attackers—and almost half developed post-traumatic syndromes.
Nazi Germans turned Jewish, Dutch and Polish women into sexual slaves before executing them. Women also suffered this violence in the very places where they were hiding. In some cases, their “protectors” ultimately became their attackers.
Rape is one of humanity’s oldest weapons and, at the same time, a weapon that remains current. This barbarity did not end with wars; many women still suffer such attacks even in places where, in theory, they should be safe and protected.

Rape crimes within the armed forces
Being a woman on a battlefield is often more dangerous than being the enemy. The American documentary The Invisible War presents testimony from one hundred women who were victims of rape within United States military barracks.
The women were assaulted by colleagues and/or superiors. According to the documentary, in 1991 the U.S. Congress estimated that by then 200,000 women had been sexually abused in the American military.
But those figures represent women who managed to file complaints. Almost all the victims had their positions or careers threatened whenever they tried to report the crimes. Attorney Susan Burke, one of the documentary’s sources, says that she repeatedly heard servicewomen say: “Rape can be terrible, but do you know what is even worse? Suffering professional retaliation in the career you chose, simply because you were raped.”
“Even with the rape kit and everything else, and with my friend catching my attacker in the act, they still did not want to believe me when I went to report it,” says Christina Jones.
Rape leaves psychological and physical scars that are difficult to heal. Kori Cioca was serving in the U.S. Coast Guard when she was assaulted by her superior. Her face was injured so badly during the attack that she still suffers jaw complications and for years has lived on a diet consisting only of gelatin, purées, soft foods and blended food because she can no longer chew ordinary food.
Wars are periods in which everyone suffers greatly—women, men, children and animals alike. But the crime of rape is a battle faced every day and on profoundly unequal terms, in which the enemy is always unknown and the attack is usually unexpected.
