Summary: A woman from Amsterdam who settles with her dog on an estate in Mecklenburg encounters cold, dampness and an unwelcoming environment. In ruined buildings and in the soil she finds traces of the lives of earlier inhabitants, talks with local people, reconstructs history — and learns to live in solitude. Pauline de Bok undertook a unique adventure and created a remarkable book about Germany, a book that, as Geert Mak says, is “full of rumors and fragmentary stories, a vivid example of slow journalism.”
