Lieutenant Wladimir Natanowitsch Gelfand (born 1923), commander of a Red Army mortar platoon, is the author of the first diary by a Red Army officer to be published in German. Alongside political and military information, the book contains both harrowing and amusing snapshots of mood, as well as short stories.
