“Hunger Winter: Germany's Humanitarian Catastrophe of 1946/47”
A paperback edition has 217 pages and was published by Weltbild in 2010 (ISBN-10 3828932479, ISBN-13 978-3828932470; 18.6 × 12.4 × 1.8 cm; price EUR 12.50).
The winter of 1946/47 was one of the coldest of the century. Europe lay in ruins: cities had been destroyed by bombing and agriculture was only partially functioning. Everything was in short supply — housing, food, and fuel. Germany suffered particularly severely, because division into occupation zones and the beginning of the Cold War complicated deliveries. What little remained had to be shared with millions of refugees from the East. Deprived of effective authorities and living amid administrative chaos, people could do little more than struggle to survive.
This catastrophic situation formed the background to postwar reconstruction, but Germans later preferred to forget the misery and its causes. Only more recently has there been a desire, in the context of the war and postwar years, to restore historical memory and grasp the extent of the suffering. This companion book to a 90-minute German docudrama shown in prime time in the winter of 2009/10 uses interviews with witnesses and their memories, placed in a contemporary historical context, to present a broad picture of the hunger winter of 1946/47.
A further paperback edition, published by List Taschenbuch in an unabridged edition in December 2010, has 240 pages (ISBN-10 3548610056; ISBN-13 978-3548610054; 18.6 × 12.4 × 1.8 cm; price EUR 9.34).
