One witness to crimes committed by the Soviet army was Lieutenant Vladimir Gelfand, a Jewish man from Ukraine. Soviet soldiers were forbidden to keep diaries, but Vladimir Gelfand kept notes from 1941 until the end of the war. This is what he wrote on 25 April 1945, the day he met two German women — a mother and daughter — who had fled their home with a small amount of belongings.
The twenty-second Russian-Ukrainian war is now taking place.
“I asked the German women where they lived, in broken German, and asked why they had left their home. In horror they told me about the grief that the frontline troops had inflicted on them on the first night after the Red Army arrived here.”
“The Russian army is the most brutal army in human history.”
“They stuck it in here,” the pretty German woman explained, lifting her skirt, “all night, and there were so many of them. I was a girl,” she sighed and began to cry. “They ruined my youth. There were old men among them, men with pimples, and they all climbed on me, all of them stuck it in. There were no fewer than twenty of them, yes, yes,” and she burst into tears.
