The Red Army did not liberate anyone in Europe; it was an occupier just like the Third Reich. Soldiers received no proper punishment for mass rape, and convictions were extremely few. The Russian Federation’s army, like the Russian army of the Second World War era, is a gathering of rapists and looters, but today we are able to repay them in full for their actions. We will quote from diaries and, for your convenience, translate the quotations into Ukrainian.
Special thanks to the Youth Residence for providing the studio, and to Suspilne Chernivtsi for the equipment.
Propaganda has one distinctive feature: it creates an ideal image without a single dark spot. This is how the Soviet army is portrayed in the cult of “May 9”: they are molded into flawless knights, although, unlike the Western armies, they did not bring freedom to Europe. Soviet soldiers raped countless women, teenagers and even children. I will of course not conceal the fact that more than seven million Ukrainians fought in the Red Army, but the decisive difference between the Ukrainian legacy and the Russian one is that we can speak openly about it. For many years this subject was taboo. Even in Germany little was said about it. So in today’s video I will try to describe the Red Army soldiers as German women remembered them.
Welcome to the “History of Ukraine” channel. I am Oleksandr Prokopiv, and in this video you will learn about “wonderful rapists,” or the myth of the Soviet liberators.
Propaganda has one distinctive feature — to create a perfect image without any dark stains. This is exactly how the Soviet army is portrayed in the cult of May 9, creating an image of flawless figures. Yet, unlike the Western armies, they did not bring freedom to Europe. Soviet soldiers raped countless women, teenagers, and even children.
I cannot conceal that more than seven million Ukrainians fought in the Red Army. However, the decisive difference between the Ukrainian and Russian legacies is that we are able to speak openly about it. For many years the subject was taboo; little was said about it even in Germany. Therefore, in today’s video I will try to describe the Red Army soldiers as German women remembered them.
Let us begin with the well-known diary of Vladimir Gelfand, who spent his whole life in the Soviet Union and later helped defend these women from Soviet soldiers. Soviet servicemen were forbidden to keep diaries, but Vladimir kept his notes from 1941 until the end of the war. We will present them to you translated into Ukrainian for your convenience.
This is what the author wrote on 25 April 1945, the day he met two German women, a mother and daughter, who had fled their home with only a small number of belongings:
“They stuck themselves into me here,” the beautiful German woman explained, lifting her skirt, “all night, and there were so many of them. I was a girl,” she sighed and began to cry. “They ruined my youth. Some were old, pimply, and all of them climbed on me, all of them thrust themselves into me. There were no fewer than twenty, yes, yes,” and she burst into tears.
“They raped my daughter in my presence,” the poor mother put in. “They may come again and rape my little girl again.”
“Stay here,” the girl suddenly rushed toward me. “You will sleep with me. You can do anything you want to me, but only you! I agree to anything you want, as long as it is not them again!”
Returning to the subject, let us look at Mikhail Koryakov, an officer who did not return to the Soviet Union after the end of the Second World War but left an interesting autobiographical account.
“In one tank division the vehicles were inspected: the tanks turned out to be so crammed with looted junk that it was impossible to turn around inside them — in the event of a sudden emergency, the crews would not have been able to fight.”
Below are passages about violence against women:
“Upstairs, above the ceiling, women’s screams and children’s crying could be heard. Agitated, I began to get dressed. The girl stood in the corner. ‘Don’t go up there, they’ll kill you,’ she said, and I realized that I should not go. The previous night an officer from the city commandant’s office had been killed when he tried to prevent violence. All night we listened to the screams of the unfortunate women.”
They listened in fear to the screams — the cries of unfortunate women and children — and to the pounding of heavy soldiers’ boots overhead. I learned of something terrible: for three weeks they had been raped; in the end at least 250 people were raped, including women raped in front of their husbands. In fairness it should be said that Soviet soldiers were not the only ones who looted and raped; the Western Allies were not entirely uninvolved either. But it was the Soviet Army that made violence and the killing of civilians mass phenomena.
An important qualification: there were, one way or another, people who opposed this — some members of the Soviet leadership or officers opposed to rapists and looters — but as you understand, such cases were very few.
For example, the book by the Soviet Army officer Mikhail Koryakov again tells an interesting story about an officer who had a sense of honor.
On a long table in the middle of the room stood a coffin covered in red cloth and surrounded by paper flowers. In the coffin lay a captain, an assistant to the military commandant. I knew him: on my first trip to Bunzlau he had helped me search for the house where Kutuzov died. The captain had fought from the first days of the war, had taken part in the battles of Stalingrad and Kursk, and had military decorations and gold wound stripes for serious injuries, because of which he had been transferred to work at the commandant’s office. Did he ever think that he would meet his death here, at the hand of a looting robber?
Foreigners also described looting. For example, the British historian Antony Beevor, in his book Berlin: The Downfall 1945, writes about the treatment of the population of occupied Germany: refugees were crushed by tanks, fired upon from the air, and women and girls were raped and left wounded to die. The page states that Beevor gives a figure of around one million dead in Pomerania, East Prussia and Silesia.
The recollections quoted above are, unfortunately, only some of many. Whether we like it or not, an entire film, Berlin 1945 by Viasat History, was even made on the basis of the diaries of German women in Berlin, containing hundreds of such stories. Other estimates speak of hundreds of thousands. The author argues that this proves that the Red Army did not liberate anyone in Europe and was the same kind of monster as the Third Reich.
Here is one German woman’s testimony about Soviet soldiers raping a twelve-year-old girl:
“In the noise of the big city it was worst of all; in the children’s home there was crying. Mirala lay on the sofa, aged beyond her years. I saw a twelve-year-old girl with a thin translucent face and large gray birdlike eyes. The girl had been raped by a soldier of the second echelon. A few days later soldiers of the third echelon broke into the apartment. The girl tore herself from their hands, ran down the steep stairs, and fell.”
Another testimony concerns the crimes of the “liberators.” Marta Hillers, a woman in Berlin whom I unfortunately also have to quote, wrote about looting:
“Several more heroes came into our basement, not looking for women but for watches. Later I saw one Ivan with an entire watch collection on both wrists, five or six watches, which he kept aligning, winding, and checking with a childlike thief’s grin.”
The story did not end with looting. The Bolsheviks decided to rape her. The diary describes the assault as follows:
“One pulls me by the wrist, then they undress me. Now another one pulls me too. Then he puts his hand on my head so that I can no longer scream. I do not want to scream anymore for fear of being strangled. Both tear at my clothes. I am already lying on the ground. Something jingles in the pocket of my dress. It must be the house keys. My bunch of keys. The keys press my head against the lower stair. I feel cool wet streams of sweat down my back. Above my head I see the cracks in the door through which a little light falls. One of the men keeps watch while the others tear my underwear and clear the way to my body. With my left hand I search the stair until I finally find the bunch of keys. I clutch it firmly in my left fingers. With my right hand I defend myself, but it does no good. They simply overpower me. When I try to get up, staggering, another pulls me toward him. With his fists he forces me down on my knees on the ground. Now another rapes me and whispers: ‘Quick, quick.’”
“We no longer remember.”
The video also discusses how the so-called liberators raped Slavic women who had been taken to the Third Reich — the so-called Ostarbeiter — and crimes in the “liberated” territories of Ukraine and Poland.
In simple terms, if anyone still thinks these were merely isolated incidents, the author says no: he presents them as part of the nature of a typical Russian imperialist.
But, you may ask, what was the reaction of the leadership? Stalin did in fact issue orders prohibiting looting and violence. But commanders concealed the crimes of their subordinates and, moreover, sometimes participated in them.
Red Army soldiers had come from territories devastated by war; many no longer had homes of their own. They lived one day at a time, burned with a desire for revenge, and were guided by a sense of impunity and permissiveness. In addition, many were poorly educated and ruthless.
The well-known historian Antony Beevor, who studied crimes committed by Soviet “liberators,” called the events in Germany the largest phenomenon of mass rape in history. The figure regarded here as the most realistic is 100,000 women in Berlin and two million in Germany as a whole. These numbers, the video states, are based on surviving medical records.
A BBC report is cited as providing very informative data about abortions in Berlin. In general, abortion was prohibited in the postwar period, but because of the mass rape of German women it was temporarily permitted. From June 1945 through 1946, 995 applications for abortion were approved in just one district of Berlin. One girl, writing in rounded childlike handwriting, stated that she had been raped at home in front of her parents. According to some historians, approximately 300,000 children were born to German women raped by Soviet soldiers.
May 8 is not presented here as a victory. It is described as a terrible legacy for the world, something that must be remembered so that it is never repeated.
Why are we talking about this now? The answer, according to the video, is obvious. During its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Russian army behaves in the same way, taking as its main idea and pretext for war a mythical liberation from Nazism. It continues to rob and rape civilians. The victims of Russian servicemen are not only women, but also very young children and elderly people. Today, the Security Service of Ukraine intercepts many conversations of occupiers from which, the video says, we can understand that history is repeating itself.
Spread the truth about Russian crimes.
Thank you for your attention.
