Diary
Wladimir Gelfand, an officer of the Red Army, recorded his impressions in a diary under the immediate impact of the fighting during the advance on Berlin. The meticulous chronicler continued his observations during the first days of the occupation. German Diary 1945–1946 (Aufbau Verlag) does not conceal breaches of discipline within Soviet ranks, acts of revenge, looting and crimes against civilians. It is a unique testimony by a victor from Stalin’s army after Germany’s collapse.
