The British broadcaster BBC plans to show a documentary devoted to the mass rapes committed by Russian troops during the occupation of Germany in World War II.
A number of pieces of evidence indicate that Soviet troops committed mass rape, despite the Kremlin dismissing such claims as a propaganda fabrication invented by the West, the broadcaster’s online edition reported on 1 May.
The film mentions the diary of Vladimir Gelfand, a Russian captain who took part in the occupation of Berlin.
“One German woman with a face distorted by horror told me about the events of the first night after the Soviet army arrived,” he wrote on 25 April 1945, when he entered Berlin and met a group of German women carrying bags of clothing.
The woman burst into tears and said that twenty men had gang-raped her. Her mother said that the Russians had raped her daughter in front of her, after which they left their home out of fear that the perpetrators would return, Gelfand recorded.
During this period, the BBC notes, German soldiers had already spent almost four years committing similar and other sexual crimes on Soviet territory.
“My father passed through numerous villages where the Nazis had killed everyone, including small children, and he saw traces of rape in those settlements,” says Gelfand’s son Vitaly.
Documents in the Russian State Archive contain testimony about mass rapes in East Prussia.
The wartime diary of the fiancée of a German soldier, shown in the film, demonstrates that some women were forced to adapt to terrible circumstances in order to survive.
The woman wrote in her diary that after realizing she needed a “wolf” capable of protecting her from gang rape by “beasts,” she entered into a relationship with a Russian officer.
Ninety-year-old Ingeborg Bullert, a German woman who was sexually assaulted by Soviet troops, recalled that women between the ages of fifteen and fifty-five were ordered to undergo examinations for sexually transmitted infections and that “a medical certificate was required in order to receive a food-ration card.”
Figures of 100,000 women in Berlin and two million throughout Germany are often cited in connection with mass rape by Soviet troops, the BBC writes, noting that the figures are based on limited surviving medical records.
The figures remain highly controversial, the report adds.
The film shows that in Neukölln, one of Berlin’s twenty-four districts, 995 applications for abortion were registered and approved between June 1945 and June 1946. Archival material is presented as evidence of widespread rape by Soviet soldiers.
